Let some people out of prison
It was reported in the NY Times that 1 out of 100 adults in America are in prison. That's over 1% of the American adult population, 1.6 million people. And don't tell me that it's creating less crime, or that it's a deterrent. America's violent crime rate is 5 times higher than Japan, and our incarceration rate is over 20 times higher. And 30% of America can't vote because of a felony on their record. And who are we locking up? Non-violent offenders, who make up more than half of the prison population in America, costing over 24 billion (with a B) dollars a year. If these crazy non-violent hippies want to grow marijuana in the gardens or take some acid or ecstasy, let them out of jail to do it. They'll have to get a job to support their habit, thus supporting the economy, and we wont be paying to lock up these poor Americans. Wasn't this the country of forgiveness and second chances?
